City Palace of Mewar dynasty Udaipur

Royal family members that resides in Mewar and its vast kingdom is believed to be been derived from the Sun and the Suryavanshis as they are referred to and trace their lineage back to Lord Rama through his older son Lav. Before Udaipur being chosen as the capital city, a number of other towns that were flourishing served as the capital, Nagda being the most ancient. It is located 20 kilometres from North from Udaipur, Nagda (Nagdriha) was declared to be the capital in the year 626 CE through Nagaditya (r. 626-646 CE) who was the fourth ruler of Mewar and remained so until the beginning of the 13th century. At various times the capital changed between Nagda as well as Aghatpur (Ahad).

 

Rawal Jaitra Singh (r. 1213 - 1953 CE) moved Chittor as the capital. Chittor and built the fort's wall for the first time. The 16th century saw Chittor was a target of several incursions and the rulers of Delhi, Malwa and Gujarat who were extremely ambitious and wanted to buy Chittor to their own.

 

Maharana Udai Singh II (r. 1537-1572 CE) recognized that he needed to find a new location, somewhere tranquil in order to set up his capital. After much deliberation and wandering He finally settled in the area now known as Udaipur which is named after the Maharana 1553 CE. It was the City Palace, Udaipur grew during the reigns of successive Maharanas, who most were ardently pursuing the constructions and expansions to the Palace Complex.

 

The year 1947 was the first time that India was declared an independent, democratic country that was completely free from British rule. Its titles as monarchs were eliminated in 1947, and the states of their respective rulers were amalgamated in the Union of India. Because of the need to ensure the preservation of these massive historical, stunning and beautiful structures, the majority of rulers were forced to transform their palaces into Heritage Hotels or into Museums. The Palace in Udaipur also became a museum known as The City Palace Museum, Udaipur.
